We're still here, we just aren't doing anything worth posting. Ha We are just doing basic school. It is too cold to do much else.
We are reading a couple of fabulous books though! God's People: Stories from the Old Testament by Geraldine McCaughrean The Children's Book of Heroes by William J. Bennett
McCaughrean's writing is so vivid! G just hangs on her words. And I love the message of the Heroes book. Before each story, Bennett states a heroic quality. Qualities I want G to learn. So far we have, Hero's use their brains and Hero's use Self Control.

Good to know you are doing well. I have a different Bennett book similar to the Heroes book. I need to dig it up.
BTW, I just saw your sidebar note about your Kindergarten Curriculumn. Wonderfully simple list. :)
you asked what I'd use for first grade...I do have ds3 waiting in the wings so I'll share what I think I'll do with him. Things with a * are what I've used with Camille.
Bible: Explorer's Bible Study, Beginnings I* (20 min) Math: Horizons Math 1* (30-45 min) Reading: Sing, Spell, Read & Write K/1, if need be Explode the Code*, How to Report on Books Grades 1-2 (Evan-Moor)* (30min -1 hour if I add read-alouds) History: Tapestry of Grace, Year 1 Redesigned, Lower Grammar focus (30 min) LA: Language Lessons for the Very Young (15-20 min) Life Science: home-grown based on living books* (30 min)
That's it unless he needed something else for reading. I wouldn't start spelling or grammar in first grade at all, not until the child is reading on a 3rd-4th grade level with proper inflection and appropriate confidence.
Language Lessons for the Very Young is on its way to my house so I can ascertain whether I need to use it with Camille to cover concepts or not.
:) It'd be about a 3 hour day when it's all said and done. I would still do poetry memorization but it might be within Language lessons for the very young's program instead of picking my own.
