Columbus Study

(He looks asleep but he really enjoyed this project)

I am really excited to study History along with G as my own experience is weak and fragmented. I really learned a lot about Christopher Columbus over the past few days as we have studied his holiday. I am going to have to do some more reading to find out why the United States has a National Holiday for an Explorer that never laid foot on North American Soil?

During our study we watched several videos, read a couple of books, played a game, and created a couple projects.

Here is a list of the resources we used:

Books
Our Columbus Day Book by Jane Moncure
Holiday Histories: Columbus Day by Mir Tamim Ansary

Video
Brain Pop jr.- Christopher Columbus
A Magic Voyage (cheesy & light on the history but fun)
Christopher Columbus: The Commemorative Series (3 vols.)

Game
Go West With Columbus (Board, Pieces)

Crafts
Paper Sailor Hats
Earth Light Catcher
Coloring Pages

Oh! Do enjoy these days of grade school homeschooling! How I long for the days of a slower paced learning! Now my youngest is in 8th grade preparing for highschool and it is a whole different ballgame! Enjoy every moment!!

I'm learning so much history with my daughter, too! Can't believe all I didn't learn!!! I'd suggest the Nest video on Columbus, too. These are great, cartoon videos my daughter and I both enjoy.

Several months ago, one of the blogs I read posted a photo of something beautiful, but unidentified, on a leaf. Was that you? (You're my first guess, but I'm not sure.) Anyway, if it is you, I think I've identified it. Let me know and send me a link - I think you have my email address, but if not you can post a comment on my blog. :-)

I am trying to stay just a day ahead of my dd. ;) Homeschooling has taught me so much. I'm looking forward to learning more.

Your Columbus study looks fantastic. The Earth Light Catcher is especially interesting. Are you using Brain Pop Jr for other learning. I've investigated it in the past but I'm not ready to allow my dd to have screen time. Do you think it is worth it?

Nina,
I have had Brain Pop Jr bookmarked for a long time but never used with G. We used it this time because someone pointed us in that direction.

BTW, the Light Catcher was so fun but I could not find my food coloring so we used glitter to color the glue. We are going to do a Jack-o-lantern in a week or so.
